“There’s a lot of fear,” he admits. “Fear of not being able, of not being on time, losing more days… It scares us. The effectiveness of the treatment is lost.”
But Yohima does not stop at lamenting. His voice tightens, becomes precise.

“Regardless of all the difficult things we go through, like every good Cuban, we have the heartbeat, the knowledge. And emotions don’t need fuel, they don’t need oil to function.”

And then he shows with pride and relief the walls of his office. Equipped with what you need to spend the night. This small and warm space has something that no blockage can frustrate: a children’s gallery. “The children, when they arrived here, did not want to cross the threshold of the door,” he recalls. A colleague had the idea of distracting them with drawings. “They were accumulating and we were sticking the drawings on the wall, some that had no color, we colored them.” The children came back and saw his work, he motivated them and wanted to bring another one. “The idea is that they make this place a place for them, where everything is fine, where everything is safe.”

Sometimes she has had to walk four hours to get to a consultation, and in that time she has told the trees that what strikes her most about those lands is that many women have no limits to give birth, that they depend on the decision of the husband and that the children arrive without rest. He has succeeded in introducing family planning, convincing mothers of the importance of vaccines and five-year implants, and thus improving the quality of life of these women and their children.

In her sessions as a teacher, she teaches nurses to look patiently. He talks to them about vaccination, prevention, care, habits and hygiene like someone who sows invisible seeds in a land that has learned to resist without complaint.

That was why one day the children began to wait for him as one expects a returning relative, the mothers learned to trust his hands and the elderly to greet him with respect.

Now, as evening falls, the rivers have begun to worry about the moment when Dr. Yunior will leave these lands.

According to the national census in 2020, the proportion of people aged 60 and above in rural areas was 23.8 percent, nearly 8 percentage points higher than that in urban areas.

Since 2021, China has been focusing on adjusting its poverty alleviation measures to align with the goal of rural vitalization, while also strengthening the provision of basic healthcare in rural areas.

The National Health Commission, along with four other government departments, launched a plan in April last year to nurture college-educated rural doctors, and nearly 7,500 graduates have been hired.

There is a tradition within Chinese culture of “Master to Disciple” transmission of spiritual, medicinal, and martial culture (I know – as I have been a recipient and beneficiary of it). This still occurs within the Chinese diaspora – and it still happens in Mainland China – but with the caveat that modern China requires a rigorous professional approach when it comes to medicine and selling treatments to the public. TCM has been aligned with the educational standards of modern medicine – both of which are available to Chinese citizens. In fact, there are entire hospitals dedicated to TCM within which all the staff are university-educated. Mainland TCM doctors also have surgeries throughout the West – and are often not cheap to consult (although some offered “free” treatment to Westerners during the Covid-19 Pandemic). Regardless, a number of law-abiding citizens in China disagree with what the Hou family has experienced via the PRC Judiciary.

Influenced by him, my father aspired to come to China, where he met my mother and later had me," said Michael Crook, chairman of the International Committee for the Promotion of Chinese Industrial Cooperatives. His parents, David and Isabel Crook, played an important role in training a large number of foreign-language professionals for China. "The spirit of Bethune has not faded with time; instead, it has been widely inherited and carried forward in both China and Canada," said Hu Jinqiang, director of the North China Military Martyrs Cemetery. Hu noted that today Bethune is not just a name but a symbol of internationalism, humanism and selfless dedication. "We commemorate him to inspire more people to remember history and carry forward his spirit."

This year marks the 85th death anniversary of Bethune, who died of blood poisoning at the age of 49 on Nov. 12, 1939 in China while aiding the Chinese people in their fight against Japanese aggression. His remains were relocated to the cemetery in 1953.

The commemoration began at 10 a.m., with participants bowing before the surgeon’s tomb and presenting flower baskets.

In 2017 the U.S. military relaxed its rules of engagement for airstrikes in Afghanistan, which resulted in a dramatic increase in civilian casualties, according to a report named Costs of War conducted by the Brown University.

From the last year of the Obama administration (2016) to the last full year of recorded data during the Trump administration (2020), the number of civilians killed by U.S.-led airstrikes in Afghanistan increased by 330 percent, the report noted.

“They (The U.S. forces) killed a two-and-half-year-old girl, a two-year-old girl and another one-and-half-year-old girl. What was the crime of those innocent children?” Khan said.
