Translator’s Note: From the all-round film footage – it is clear that many more women took part in this Parade than the female Militia featured in this article. Many are “Professional” rank and file career military and represented every arm of the PLA – including Combat Medics. There were also many women musicians who took a statis position and dutifully played their instruments throughout. All of this contribution needs to be acknowledged. I will say that for the part-time Militia to march as good as the professionals soldiers is a really outstanding achievement! These women work in factories, schools, and nurseries, etc, and have to train before work in the mornings, after work in the evenings, and at weekends. In times of war – these women would give their lives for their country without a moment’s hesitation. ACW (6.9.2025)
During Socialist China’s Great Military Parade, the Women’s Militia Unit not only displayed exemplary military and national prestige, but also exhibited the “Heroic Spirit” that lies at the heart of every Chinese women!
On the morning of September 3rd, 2025, the Conference Commemorating the 80th Anniversary of the Victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War – was held in Tiananmen Square in Beijing. At the Great Military Parade, a total of 45 Military Units paraded, among which the Women’s Militia Unit represented the vast number of Basic Militias and Ordinary Militias from across the country. These women shouldered the important task of showing the disciplined and serious style of the People’s Militia in the new era – and their efforts were quite eye-catching. This was the only all-woman Military Unit on the Parade ground – and it was also the first Military Unit to appear at the Commemorative March representing the theme of “Victory During the Anti-Japanese War”.

The 66 seconds that the Women’s Militia Unit marched through Tiananmen Square were absolutely perfect – behind the marching-steps of thousands of soldiers – were 37 pairs of worn leather shoes – the average walking distance of 50 laps of the track and field every day, with millimetre-level accuracy forged by the backpack, rope and laser rangefinder. The Militia participating in this Parade was drawn from 15 provinces, covering the main Anti-Japanese Base Areas led by the Communist Party of China (CPC) during the Anti-Japanese War. Some of the Women’s Militia Unit came from the Railway Guerrillas, Plain Guerrillas and other fine traditional Militia Units who achieved great military achievements. This included Militia organizations that developed unique tactics such as tunnel warfare, mine warfare, and sparrow warfare. In the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the size of Socialist China’s Militia reached more than 2.6 million. The vast number of militias participated in the war and fought bravely to annihilate more than 106,000 enemies, causing the Imperial Japanese invaders to fall in vast numbers during the People’s War.
At present, the Militia is an important part of Socialist China’s “Three-Combined” Armed Force System. In the new era, the Militia is better performing its role in serving during peacetime, responding to emergencies, and participating in combat during wartime. In particular, it is worth mentioning that the Women’s Militia Unit has undergone many changes in uniform. Today (2025) the Women’s Militia Unit is dressed in camouflage uniforms – fully demonstrating the new image of the Chinese Militia in the new era.
Looking back through history, from the first National Day Parade of the Women’s Militia Unit in 1958 to the National Day Parade in 1984 – the appearance of the Women’s Militia Unit (of the People’s Liberation Army) always exhibited the unique style of the “heroine”. Militia-women in Socialist China first participated in the marching that began in 1958 during the capital’s National Day Parade. At that time, the Women’s Militia Unit who participated in the Parade came from Beijing’s National Cotton Factories No. 1, 2, and 3 – all in the Chaoyang District. All the uniforms were hand-made by eaxh woman involved, with all wearing white short-sleeved shirts, blue trousers, and white training-shoes, whilst holding (domestic) Submachine Guns. This was the first time that the Chaoyang Women’s Militia Unit appeared in an important Military Parade.
During the 1959 National Day 10th Anniversary Parade, the Women’s Militia Unit also appeared. However, there had been changes in dress. All Militia-women wore hard (wicker) hats and overalls, whilst the manner in which their guns were held guns has altered. This was changed from holding a gun across the chest to a carrying the gun on the shoulder. The personnel were from various units in Chaoyang District, Beijing.
The Women’s Militia Unit appeared during the Great Military Parade on the 35th Anniversary of the National Day in 1984. This was the first Military Parade after the Reform and Opening Up. The members of the Women’s Militia Unit were selected from 17 factories and enterprises in Beijing’s Chaoyang District, including Engineers, Technical Operation Experts, and models of Public Security who worked in the capital.
In 1999, during the 50th Anniversary of the National Day Parade, the Women’s Militia Unit once again amazed on the parade ground. The Women’s Militia Unit was still composed of recruits from the Chaoyang District. Like the 35th Anniversary of the National Day Military Parade, this Militia uniform was specially designed and produced for the Parade. Rather than wearing ordinary military duty clothing whilst marching, fashion characteristics were emphasised and became more prominent. The original design of the Women’s Militia Unit’s clothing was a white suit skirt, red beret, black high boots and a white belt. Later, because the white colour was similar to that of the Naval Unit’s clothing, it was finally decided to change white to red, with all other aspects remaineding unchanged. In this way, the Women’s Militia Unit wearing red berets, red standard military clothing, and holding (domestic) 81-1 Automatic Rifles – made these soldiers even more spectacular and heroic.
In the 2009 National Day 60th Anniversary Military Parade, the Women’s Militia Unit was still participating. The Women’s Militia Unit wore rose red trench coat-style clothing, silver-grey berets, silver-grey boots, with each carrying a Type 85 Light Submachine Gun. As in the past, the Women’s Militia Unit was still selected from the Militia Forces of the Chaoyang District in Beijing. They were most beautiful entity on the parade ground.
In the 2019 National Day 70th Anniversary Military Parade, the uniforms of the Women’s Militia Unit still continued the red colour, and as usual, they were also selected from the Women’s Militia of the Chaoyang District of Beijing, with an average age of 26 years old and an average height of 1.7 metres. When officially on parade, the uniform was bright red, with a white hat, belt and boots, with each Militia-woman carrying a Miniature Submachine Gun.
