Werth’s ‘The Year of Stalingrad’ conveys the sheer terror and horror of battle that unfolded in Stalingrad along a ten-mile wide front. The Nazi Germans (and their ‘Catholic’ allies) often launched upwards of ’40’ full-force attacks a day all along the Soviet front-line – combining SS, Infantry, tanks and aeroplanes! This caused the deaths of tens of thousands of Soviet Red Army soldiers and the disintegration of numerous Red Army formations! It was only when the notoriously ‘tough’ ‘Siberian’ Division into Stalingrad was placed into theatre that the Nazi Germans were finally checked – and eventually turned-back! This Soviet victory in 1942 gave hope to the world!

The anti-Soviet leaflets are aimed at the average (ordinary) Red Army soldier and talk of ‘capitalist’ England and America being the greatest threat to world peace! The anti-Hitlerite leaflet informs the average Nazi German soldier that his leaders are hypocritical capitalists ‘pretending’ to be ‘Socialists’!
According to Matsuno, Japan’s WWII-related records have been transferred to the National Archives of Japan (NAJ) by the Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare, while some diplomatic and military-related documents are kept by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense.
Every once in a while, the NAJ would release batches of newly processed historical materials, among which Matsuno spotted the recently discovered documents.
The researcher pointed out that even when new materials are made available, they can remain obscure without substantial expertise and research skills, as searching for information using keywords like “Unit 731” or “epidemic prevention unit” yields little results.
Indeed, when the Trotskyite – George Orwell – was asked by the incumbent Labour Party to compile his infamous (1948) ‘list’ of well-known left-wingers he suspected of possessing ‘Communist’ sympathies – the name of ‘Alexander Werth’ featured prominently! This interfering in the historical record is so remarkable that Werth’s near ‘eye-witness’ account of the ‘Battle of Stalingrad’ (which changed WWII forever) is not only completely ignored by Western authors who came after him – but seldom known to even exist!
