Qianfeng Daoism: Enter the Dragon! (9.2.2024)

Considering how important the concept of the ‘Dragon’ is throughout Chinese culture – I was surprised just how haphazard the construction of its representing ideogram actually is. As this is my area of academic expertise, I could not believe what I was looking at! Consequently, it took me three-days to disentangle the mess that this ideogram seems to have gotten itself into. Having achieved this objective – I then unloaded the finished article onto the Qianfeng Daoist website I help to administer.

China: Gansu Buddhist ‘Smile of the Orient’ Said to Equal That of the ‘Mona Lisa’! (5.9.2023)

The early Buddhist groups in China mirrored that of the extant Confucian scholiastic system – often forming around married laymen – with disciples taking the surname of the teacher as their ‘Dharma-Name’ and essentially becoming an extension of his family. Grottoes such as that featured below were places where Buddhists could meet, share and practice their understanding of Indian Buddhist philosophy. An understanding of Buddhist monasticism started to arrive and distinguish itself in China from the existing lay-practice around the 5th century CE – the date I believe this ‘smiling’ monk appears to date from. Whereas Buddhist lay-practitioners did not shave their heads (like Daoists and Confucians) – monastic Buddhists (male and female) were required to shave their heads – indicative of their ‘rejecting’ of the desire-laden conventions that define, guide and justify the external world.

London: St James Palace! (25.8.2023)

We had to head South-West from Trafalgar Square around 0.6 miles toward Buckingham Palace. Our intention was to show the children – Mei-An and Kai-Lin – how the soldiers carry-out their duties in an orderly and well-organised manner. Although the frontline ‘Guards’ had been drawn back away from the crowds decades ago at Buckingham Palace – I knew that the general public could still get reasonable close at the nearby St James Palace – but on the day of our visit – the soldiers were not to be seen in their usual places! Indeed, most were absent except for the side-gate which is used for the main entrance (pictured above) – but even here – the soldiers had been pulled-back behind the metal fence and away from the public.

‘When I see Wasps and Hornets flying around possessing good food and living in the best dwellings whilst Bees suffer deprivation and impoverishment – I am inspired to do something about it! Yes – this I swear to you – my dear Comrades! Oh yes – these dominant populations cannot be reasoned with – they cannot even speak – but one language I am sure they understand is that of violence and force! I will take action against these undesirable populations by using different mixes of pesticides! Eradicating troublesome (competing) populations is the only way!’

DPRK: The Ingenuity of ‘Natural’ Socialism! (8.4.2023)

After a while, the respected Comrade General Secretary said that even if the children are not directly instructed by adults to keep to the right – they will quite naturally step on the outlines (and travel up and down the stairs) keeping to the right-hand side of the stairs entirely by themselves! He said that this was an excellent example of natural education – achieved with only a minimal correct effort regarding planning!

The Nursery Workers’ hearts grew warm with appreciation! As they were only doing their duty for the people – to receive such unexpected praise from the respected General Secretary was completely unexpected and very much welcomed! The next step is always an event in action as the construction of Socialism relies on a continuous outpouring of such ingenius ideas – a processes that NEVER ceases – the General Secretary confirned!
