Wonderfully discontinuous! Professor Charles Chuck from up North! Today, the venerable Professor addresses the subject of ancient Celtic Horoscopes – and informs the audience of an interesting archaeological find in a cave somewhere in England. Although I am considered an expert in translating ancient Chinese text – I cannot translate what Prof. Chuck is saying (or the way he is saying it) for non-native Brits. Apologies for that – you are stuck with reality I’m afraid. Just allow the cadence to wash across you like a cool breeze and permit the jumbled metaphors to come and go as they please. This is from the James Whale Show of 1993. A masterpiece of a sketch. It may not mean a lot to you – but it meant even less to Prof. Chuck! I have had academic teachers who made about as much sense to me as Ptof. Chuck means to everyone else!

US Dictates Terms!

US: Population Warned to Stop “Droning” On! (18.12.2024)

As the US government instils a sense of invincibility in its people – what constitutes this “threat” often takes on a definite “other-worldly” dimension! Even before WWII (and the later US-derived “Cold War”) – the sheep-like population of the US believed it’s country was under attack from Martians! Following a radio broadcast of HG Wells’ “War of the Worlds” (narrated by Orson Wells) in 1938 – widespread panic ensued as aeroplanes, kites, clouds, stars, and tricks of the light were reported all over the US as “UFOs”! Witnesses believed 100% that the US was being invaded by Martians armed with advanced weaponry and technology. Farmers armed with shotguns mistook unfamiliar water-towers for Martians already deployed on earth – and opened-fire!

Pluto is a Collection of Planitudes!

Space: I Remember When “Pluto” Used to be the “9th” Planet! (16.3.2024)

Things were simple when I was at school in the 1970s and early 1980s – in fact they were simple until NASA’s Voyager Probes (I & II) finally made it to the outer reaches of our Solar System – and proved that “Pluto” was NOT a single (and tidy) planet existing on the fringes of outer space! Overnight, what we had been taught as a child collapsed in upon itself and the number of “true” planets dropped to “8” – with Pluto being relegated to a mere “Dwarf” planet – whatever that meant. I do remember various Astronomers stating that when looked at through a telescope – Pluto seemed to “shimmer” – as if there might be another planet hiding behind it (a fabled “10” planet called “Nibiru” as things stood).

Ancient Chinese Canoe!

Ancient China: 5000 BCE Neolithic Boat Discovered at Hemudu, [Yuyao] Zhejiang! (13.3.2024)

From grasping usurping natural floating objects (such as people straddling a tree trunk or holding a gourd as a means of crossing a body of water) to waist-floats (perhaps several gourds tied together with ropes to increase the buoyancy of the mid-riff) to rafts (flat and wide buoyant objects tied together to increase the buoyancy – enough to bear the weight of a person whilst floating across the water). The emergence of rafts was a clear sign of a great technological leap forward for humanity which removed a traveller getting wet and actively creating proper water vehicles. Later, with the help of stone axes and fire (according to Friedrich Engels), a “boat” (as a “Canoe”) was made from a whole piece of wood. An example of this is pictured above which stems from the 7,000-year-old (c. 5000 BCE) Neolithic ruins discovered at Hemudu, Yuyao, situated in Zhejiang.
