London: Broken Biscuits and Paternalistic Capitalism: Was the Bermondsey Biscuit Factory a Worker’s Paradise or is the Truth Less Sweet? (13.1.2025)

The first female clerks, responsible for typewriting invoices and the telephone exchange, were employed in 1885. The new hires may have been surprised to find the company brochure had a dedicated ladies’ section called ‘Matters Feminine’. However, the suffragettes would not have been too impressed with its content. Topics mainly included cooking, family and fashion.

‘It is all very well for a man to smile at the feminine love of clothes, and dismiss them as being of very little importance in life. Women know better. Husbands, who profess not to admire fashions, are not slow to complain at the dowdy appearance of their wives,’ read one passage.

In the following decades, many of the women employed found promotions were very much possible. Anne Edwards, who got a job as a clerical assistant in 1957, wrote: “Brilliant employers, they paid for me to attend Pitman’s College to extend my shorthand skills. They monitored my progress, my typewriting skills and promoted me from junior to manager’s secretary in the same department. I loved working there.”

Saying that all consumer goods are directly related to the people’s living, he added that to fully supply quality consumer goods is not merely an economic and technical affair but an important matter of valuing and defending our own things and demonstrating the advantages of our social system.

He stressed the need for industrial establishments to put production on a normal footing and steadily improve the quality of products so that the people can benefit from them, not content with the production and display of samples.

His instructions clearly indicate the criteria of thinking and practice of officials who are directly responsible for improving the people’s standard of living.

DPRK: “Officials – Become Communist Revolutionaries – Possessing Party’s Original Spirit & Ideal!” (11.10.2024)

All the officials should embody the Party’s original ideals and spirit, and they should remain faithful to their responsibility and duty as the leading personnel of the revolution in the ongoing drive to open up a golden age for strengthening the whole party and achieving national prosperity.

Filled with greater conviction and mounting morale, we are advancing more vigorously and confidently to bring earlier the victory of socialist and communist construction by carrying forward the invaluable and sacred ideals and spirit.

The intention in pioneering the cause of the Workers’ Party of Korea was a truth, and its victory is a truth as well.

The great soul of our forerunners is encouraging us.

Let us all endeavour to keep up the revolutionary upsurge in the new era by making redoubled efforts to achieve proud results with a strong sense of honour and responsibility as befitting the hard core of the great Party and the leading personnel of the revolution.

May 1st – The US Origins of Labour Day! (1.5.2024)

In 1890, May Day “reached” the Russian Empire, where it was first marked by a strike of 10,000 Warsaw workers. Since 1900, various demonstrations and strikes have been held annually on May 1st, but it became possible to freely celebrate May Day only after the victory after the February Revolution (February 1917) – before this date, the holiday was considered “Sedition” and was officially banned by the Czarist government. And already on May 1st, 1917, under the Bolshevik slogans “Down with the Imperialist War” and “All Power to the Soviets,” millions of workers marched along the streets of Russian cities!

He expressed great satisfaction at the fact that the factory has inspired great enthusiasm for struggle by briskly conducting dynamic mass movements including technological innovation movement and effectively organizing Socialist emulations among workshops, work-teams and operators, giving priority to ideological education, and that the employees are keeping their workplaces clean and tidy with warm love for their factory and creating a highly cultured labour and production environment.

In his work Gramsci talked of taking over already existing Bourgeois establishments and ‘transforming’ them from within. In this method, Gramsci seemed to be advocating that an outright external (disruptive) Revolution was not required in the material world – only through a slow but continuous process of internal ‘gutting’ which sees the Bourgeois innards fully extracted and replaced with Proletariat equivalents! For Gramsci, the Revolution happens right under the nose of the Bourgeoisie – who cannot resist or prevent it because they possess NO idea that it is happening!
