Huang Xuhua, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, recipient of the Medal of the Republic, and chief designer of China’s first-generation nuclear submarines, passed away at the age of 99 on Thursday in Wuhan, Central China’s Hubei Province.
Known as the “father of China’s nuclear submarines,” Huang had dedicated his whole life to the development and advancement of China’s nuclear submarine programme.
When they arrived, nobody wanted to help. They had to walk the streets for two-days in the Oxford area until a Police Constable directed them to a local school. Here, they were given food and a bed on the floor of a school hall. Eventually, a local family let them live in a small cottage – where they slowly developed a new life. My grandfather joined the Royal Navy Patrol Service (RNPS) and fought in the North Atlantic fighting in-part alongside the USSR. My grand-uncle joined the Coldstream Guards and guard Buckingham Palace for a time. At the beginning, local Oxford people did not like the Cockney accents of my family – but they soon got use to it. My family eventually got jobs in the local area, joined Unions, and integrated into the local community. This is why I was born in Oxford. I am the product of displacement due to war – albeit within my own country. Today, the bourgeoisie loves to make international “war” as a business option that generates billions of dollars each year.
Lin Yuan, Assistant Director of the International Development Department of CFRD, also spoke at the event. He mentioned that the 1,000 bicycles, delivered via the China-Laos Railway — a symbol of the friendship between the two countries — reflect the strong bond between the people of Laos and China.
One of the recipients, Athit Khounthavong, a Lao student, shared his excitement upon receiving a new bicycle. “It was very inconvenient to go to school before, as it took me half an hour to walk. Now, with the bicycle, I can get to school in just 10 minutes. Going to school has become much more convenient!” he said.
Natnael Tamru, the Ethiopian team’s goalkeeper and a taxi driver visiting China for the first time, shared similar sentiments. The 33-year-old praised Rongjiang’s vibrant football atmosphere and said he hopes teams from the Village Super League will one day visit Ethiopia to share the joy of the sport.
During halftime, Ethiopian cheerleaders and Rongjiang’s ethnic minority groups performed on the court.
“This is a great opportunity to showcase our culture to China and help more people learn about Ethiopia,” said Beamlak Biruk, one of the cheerleaders.
“Football attracts people from around the world to share their cultures, and it also allows foreigners to explore Chinese culture,” said Dolla Mihretu Samuel, a member of the Ethiopian team. “Cun Chao has become a platform for communication between China and other countries.”
Messages and letters also came from the director of the International Department of the Socialist Workers’ Party of Croatia, the international secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the People of Spain, the vice-chairman of the Socialist Freedom Party of Egypt, the secretary for International Relations of the Brazilian Communist Party, the co-chairman of the Board of Directors of the Kim Il Sung-Kim Jong Il Foundation, the director-general of the International Institute of the Juche Idea, the secretary general of the African Regional Committee for the Study of the Juche Idea and other high-ranking personages of political, social and economic circles in China, Russia, Nepal, Myanmar, Singapore, Cambodia, Thailand, Pakistan, Palestine, Iran, Indonesia, India, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Romania, Bulgaria, Belarus, Switzerland, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Finland, Croatia, Poland, Serbia, Britain, Austria, Italy, Spain, Nigeria, South Africa, Equatorial Guinea, Egypt, Ethiopia, Mexico, Brazil, Venezuela, Chile and Ecuador and the organizations for the study of the Juche idea and representatives of the international bodies here.
This year marks the 85th death anniversary of Bethune, who died of blood poisoning at the age of 49 on Nov. 12, 1939 in China while aiding the Chinese people in their fight against Japanese aggression. His remains were relocated to the cemetery in 1953.
The commemoration began at 10 a.m., with participants bowing before the surgeon’s tomb and presenting flower baskets.
“My father met Norman Bethune in Spain during his recovery from battle injuries. Influenced by him, my father aspired to come to China, where he met my mother and later had me,” said Michael Crook, chairman of the International Committee for the Promotion of Chinese Industrial Cooperatives.
His parents, David and Isabel Crook, played an important role in training a large number of foreign-language professionals for China.
“The spirit of Bethune has not faded with time; instead, it has been widely inherited and carried forward in both China and Canada,” said Hu Jinqiang, director of the North China Military Martyrs Cemetery.
