Both the book and the film lull the audience into a false ‘Socialist’ accepting paradigm – space is conquered through Socialist Science – but then bursts this bubble by having the Czech Cosmonaut ‘advertise’ a cleaning agent “live” from his Space Capsule! Capitalist and exploitative through and through – but it gets far worse. The father of the Cosmonaut is described as an ‘Informant’ of the Communist Party (rather than a ‘defender of the people’ – what he really was)! The father is punished, his son (the Cosmonaut) is punished – as are various other members of his family – but by whom? Supposedly by the masses of the Czech Republic – masses who were members of the Communist Party and benefitted directly from its egalitarian policies!
On the other hand, if US-born (Asian) actors – pretending to be a) Japanese and b) medieval – presses your buttons then this show is definitely for you. An extra treat is in store if you like random White (European) people pretending to be a) English, and b) Elizabethan. The fact Japan is currently (and deliberately) pumping nuclear waste into the South China Sea has much to do with the manner in which this mini-series has been received. This happens at a time when Japan continues to antagonise China by refusing to acknowledge internationally recognised boundaries – whilst not apologising for WWII atrocities! A positive US decreed media consensus has declared this piece of parody (and Eurocentric mimicry) to be universally a ‘great success’.
However, the ‘London Recruits’ who travelled to fight the Apartheid in South Africa during the 1970s – was a British ‘Communist Party’ initiative – one of the few post-1945 initiatives that advocated directly opposing certain extreme elements of the Bourgeois Establishment. Khrushchev’s betrayal of Stalin during 1956 (and 1961) caused all kinds of divisions throughout the International Communist Party. I think that before he committed himself to the Bourgeois Labour Party – George Galloway was a Communist. Indeed, most of the videos of Galloway expressing pro-Communist ideas have subsequently been removed from the internet. The ‘new’ Galloway is Islamic-bigotry friendly – and whilst he works to eradicate gays and trans from society – he might grant you one or two Socialist attributes and reforms. He might even throw you a football to keep you quiet. Only the call to prayer will disrupt the game – but only if the local clock is working on the Town Hall!
I agree, the film is stunning, moving and dialectically thrilling – but did Spielberg work his Zionist magic? After watching the Blu-ray of Empire of the Sun a number of times and re-reading JG Ballard’s beautiful novel – I have yet again detected Spielberg fiddling with the perception of the world – using his usual method of precise omission. Jim declares that he has become an ‘atheist’ – but Spielberg censors-out the fact that he is also thinking of joining the Communist Party. Chiang Kai-Shek made a habit of beheading any caught Communist guerrillas – placing their heads on spikes in the centre of Shanghai for all to see. Jim had become impressed with the Communist Unions that agitated for the rights of workers employed by ‘White’ Europeans (such as his father) – and the battle waged by Mao Zedong and his forces living in the hills (a famous Chinese actress had resigned from her lavish profession in the Movies and the cinemas – and had joined Mao Zedong’s Communist guerrillas) – all omitted by Spielberg.
