Portraying China’s manufacturing capacity as a global risk, this narrative is a variant of the “China threat” rhetoric, with its toxic seed germinating in the hotbed of the West’s anxiety, or probably fear, due to China’s manufacturing rise.
From a low-cost manufacturing base to the world’s largest manufacturing powerhouse and an up-and-coming leader in advanced industries and innovation, China’s rapid elevation has unsettled some Western countries, who perceive it as an intolerable challenge to their industrial and trade dominance.
Responding to China’s manufacturing prowess with such apprehension smacks of hypocrisy and also ignores basic economics. China’s production capacity was seemingly not a problem at a time when many Western corporations capitalized on the country’s low-cost original equipment manufacturer (OEM) production capabilities.
Neither was it a problem when Western superiority was underlined by China having to sell a billion pairs of socks to buy a Boeing airplane, nor when China’s spare-parts production abilities helped propel worldwide sales of high-value-added products such as Apple iPhones.
A minor consideration for the US involves Elon Musk (a rightwinger and Zionist) – who has used China’s huge workforce to cheaply assembly his own brand of EVs – whilst stimulating China’s internal market to build their own EVs – and sell them to the West. The US has responded to this by placing ridiculous tariffs (as much as 200%) on all Chinese EVs imported into the West (a draconian policy followed by the UK and EU, etc) – a markup which renders these cars virtually unsellable! I envisage a time when we will all be queuing-up with our EVs at petrol-pump type chargers – and be paying about the same for a fully charged battery – as we used to do for a full tank of petrol!
Since 2022, Japan has signed reciprocal access agreements with Australia, Britain and the Philippines, forming a “quasi-alliance” relationship. Japan has also strengthened its collusion with NATO, attempting to “invite the wolf into the house.” During Kishida’s visit to the United States in April this year, the two sides raised their defense ties to unprecedented levels.
These contentious moves by Japan violate its exclusively defense-oriented policy and pacifism embodied in its Constitution and pose security threats to East Asia.
Ukeru Magosaki, a former Japanese foreign ministry official, said that disputes between Japan and its Asian neighbors could be resolved diplomatically; however, the Japanese government has blindly catered to the demands of the United States and gone down a dangerous path of military buildup.
It is time for Japan to genuinely consider what kind of policy can bring it security.
The point is that narratives can be complex and confusing. Why did the Neo-Nazi Ukrainians develop a “SS” military Unit termed “Nightingale” during WWII? Why does the modern military of Ukraine still maintain such a (post-1991) Unit? Mary Seacole (1805-1881) was a “Brittish” Nurse of West Indian origin who was “refused” entry into Florence Nightingale’s Nursing Unit due to the “Black” colour of her skin. To overcome this discrimination, Mary Seacole recruited her own Nurses (multi-ethnic in nature) who set-up Treatment Centres right next to the battefield! Grateful British soldiers often wrote to their families explaining how a “Black” Nurse had treated their wounds and cared for them – prior to them encountering Florence Nightingale. Until recently, this genuine history was excluded from the British history books.
