The U.S. government must ensure accountability for all violations of international law, both for victims of its counter-terrorism practices, present and former detainees, and victims of terrorism, said Ni Aolain. “I underscore the importance of apology, full remedy, reparation and guarantees of non-repetition to all victims. And these guarantees will be no less pressing in the years ahead.”

Ni Aolain was appointed the special rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms while countering terrorism by the UN Human Rights Council. She took up her functions in August 2017.

The spokesperson pointed out that the U.S. is known to be a nation of immigrants, adding that none of the country’s political, economic, social, cultural and technological advances would have been possible without the enormous contribution of immigrants.

“However, throughout the country’s history, many immigrant communities were treated cruelly by the U.S. government. Recent years have even witnessed humanitarian disasters on refugees and immigrants in the US,”Mao said.

“The U.S. needs to seriously reflect on its terrible record on the issue of refugees and immigrants and correct its course, and make real efforts to improve the situations of refugees and immigrants,” she added.

Mao said the U.S. should stop all hegemonic and bullying practices and avoid creating new refugee crises in the world.
