Many of these Eastern European countries were either proud members of the mighty USSR – or the post-1945 Socialist regimes of a “Liberated” Eastern Europe (the so-called “Communist Bloc”)! Under Socialism – many of these countries (including Hungary) were considered exceptional footballing nations. Socialism prefers non-exploitative sport to build nations from the ground up. Obviously, we currently have to exist in a world of capitalist exploitation – but surely – when the ball is in free motion we are just as free in our minds and bodies!
