This experience prompted the 19 year old Daniel to take a year out from university, and spend it touring China – this is where he met his future wife – Xiao Yan. In just 4 moths, Daniel learned to read and write the Chinese language to a very precise degree – and speak fluent putonghua (i.e. ‘Mandarin’) as if he had been born in China.

The use of ‘spirit technique’ (神功 – Shen Gong), may well have physically and psychologically ‘shocked’ Xu Xiaodong, with the obvious physical effects manifesting some days later. Certainly, for at least three days after the ‘fight’ Xu Xiaodong was acting irrationally, and saying all kinds of weird and unusual things.

On Being Chinese…
The Chinese diaspora should make more of an effort to relate to China – the historical and cultural home of their ethnicity. A certain type of White person will not like this (and will cast aspersions of ‘disloyalty’), but this kind of White people tells you to go back to China anyway – so why listen to these racist morons?
