My father is something of a local celebrity around the Paignton area. Why? Well, about 15 years ago he started waving at passing traffic and attracted a cult-like following. Even the Guardian, Mail, and Telegraph all hunted him down for an interview. He is viewed by locals as a Gandalf-figure – who pisses off the local hotel managers, police, and even members of the local lodge – if you catch my drift. On occasion he has been one wave away from an ASBO – or whatever the anti-social orders have been called – but as he is not making the noise, there’s not alot the nay-sayers can do about his tactics of undermining the status quo.
