The book drew heavy criticism at the time for its approving treatment of Adolf Hitler’s political tactics, relying heavily on Mein Kampf as a source. Human-rights groups condemned the work, and it was eventually withdrawn from sale.

Takaichi’s connection lies in the book’s preface she authored. In it, she reflected on her own experiences as a political candidate and invoked what she described as the “willpower” necessary to persevere—a theme critics say uncomfortably echoes the book’s overall tone.

He was fined by the police for attending a party in 2020 during the country’s COVID-19 lockdown, becoming the first serving UK prime minister in history to break the law. Revelations of him and his employees reveling in booze-fueled parties in 2020 and 2021 at Downing Street infuriated the British public.

COVID-19 killed more than 230,000 people in the UK, one of the highest death tolls in Europe.

The COVID-19 inquiry is chaired by Baroness Heather Hallett, a former Court of Appeal judge. The inquiry is split into four areas: resilience and preparedness; core UK decision making and political governance; the impact of COVID-19 on healthcare systems; vaccines, therapeutics and antiviral treatment.

Hallett said she intends to publish the report on the first area of work by early summer 2024.

“Taiwan independence” activities and support from foreign forces are the greatest threat to peace across the Taiwan Strait, the embassy said, adding Truss and the like are colluding with secessionist forces to provoke confrontation and escalate tensions across the Taiwan Strait.

The Taiwan question is at the core of China’s core interests. Any violation of the one-China principle will have serious consequences for China-UK relations, it said, urging Truss to stop making political shows out of the Taiwan question.

Wang Wenbin, spokesman of the Foreign Ministry, said on Wednesday afternoon China’s position on the Taiwan question is consistent and clear. Wang said he also noticed there has been a flurry of criticism in the UK about Truss’s move, calling the trip showmanship and a disservice to her country.
