Colombia: Ancient Checua DNA Reveals “New Group of Humans” With No Genetic Ties to People Today! (4.1.2026)

Scientists have found genetic evidence of an ancient group of people in Colombia with no modern-day descendants. It’s as if they simply vanished from the face of the Earth. What’s more, they’re also not closely related to the ancient Native American populations that scientists had thought would be their ancestors.

“This is unexpected,” Andre Luiz Campelo dos Santos, an archaeologist from Florida Atlantic University who did not participate in the research, tells Adithi Ramakrishnan at the Associated Press. “Up to this point, we didn’t believe there was any other lineage that would appear in South America.”

An international team of researchers described the discovery in a study published in late May in the journal Science Advances. They analyzed DNA from the bones and teeth of 21 individuals found at five archaeological sites in the Altiplano—the high plains around Bogotá—dating to between 500 and 6,000 years ago. The analyses represent Colombia’s first ancient human genomes ever to be published.

Most of the overseas Chinese in Panama today come from Chinese workers who came to the Americas in the late Qing Dynasty. Contrary to the friendly attitude of the Panamanian government towards China today, from the late Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China (1911), there have been many anti-China trends in the Americas, and Panama has also been involved in such turmoil. The main reason for this is that diligent and thrifty Chinese workers were more likely to accumulate wealth, and become the target of persecution – because they possessed no political status (such as citizenship). There was a time when Panama even legislated to deprive overseas Chinese of their property. In order to avoid the plundering of their hard-earned savings, Chinese workers in Panama (at that time) had to try to find women of other races to inter-marry with in order to transfer their property to their wives or children. This experience of racism has greatly changed the Chinese faces of Panama from that of their ancestors. Today, many look entirely “Panamanian” with only their surnames carrying a connection to the Chinese motherland and hometown.

In essence, the draft was to authorize, under Chapter VII of the UN Charter, a force with a mandate to conduct independently robust military operations. Fu pointed out that the U.S. is the biggest disruptor of peace and stability in the South China Sea. The U.S. has deployed offensive weapons in the region, including ground-based intermediate-range missiles, and has frequently sent large-scale naval and air forces to the South China Sea for military reconnaissance and exercises.

By flexing its muscles and acting recklessly near other countries’ borders, Washington aims only to stir up trouble in the South China Sea to serve its own geopolitical interests, Fu said.

U.S. hegemony, Cold War mentality and unilateral actions are rapidly heightening global maritime security risks. The U.S. has yet to join the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and refuses to fulfil its related obligations. It disregards international law and warnings from the International Seabed Authority by unilaterally deciding to exploit international seabed resources and seize what is considered the common heritage of humankind, the envoy said.

The Panama Canal, an artificial waterway in Panama that connects the Atlantic with the Pacific, was completed by the United States in 1914 and returned to Panama in 1999 under a treaty signed by then U.S. President Jimmy Carter and then Panamanian leader Omar Torrijos. The deal relinquishes American control over the canal by year 2000 and guarantees its neutrality.

Alexander Werth’s 1947 book, ‘The Year of Stalingrad’, details the journey of Merchant Navy Ship “Empire Baffin” during WWII. The ship left Middlesborough, UK, for Reykjavik on May 1, 1942, arriving ten days later, and then sailed to Murmansk, USSR, on May 20th. Despite Nazi Germany’s control of the sea, air, and land, and losing seven ships, the Convoy PQ-16 of 36 international ships managed to reach port under the protection of naval fleets.
