Mr Storan objected to the video being shown and said it was “manifestly inadmissible”.

Judge Andrew Cody allowed the video to be shown after journalists and members of the public left the courtroom.

Giving his decision, the judge said the video was recovered from a co-accused’s phone and appeared to show four men dressed in black and wearing balaclavas in front of a tricolour.

He said two of the people remove their balaclavas at the end of the video and another person has the balaclava loose around his eyes.

The judge said he was satisfied that gardai’s opinion that Mr Peckauskas is one of the four men was well-founded.

“I was shocked when I got an email saying I have to leave,” Dutta told the Observer. “I have been employed at different universities in the UK and I’ve lived here for 12 years. A large part of my adult life has been lived in the UK since I came to the University of Oxford to do my master’s. I never thought something like this would happen to me.”

Dutta first came to the UK in September 2012 on a student visa and later obtained a spouse visa as a dependant of her husband, who obtained a visa on a “global talent” route. According to her lawyer, Naga Kandiah, at MTC Solicitors: “These research trips were not optional but essential to fulfilling her academic and institutional obligations. Had she not undertaken these trips, she would not have been able to complete her thesis, meet the academic requirements of her institutions or maintain her visa status.”

When Mainland Chinese people arrive in the West, usually as students, or sometimes employees, they are usually shell-shocked at the very different culture they find – even if the people are kind and considerate. The fundamental dualism that has built the Judeo-Christian world is thoroughly alien to these people (I have even found this to be the case regarding the very small percentage of genuine Christians that exist in China). Whenever I have travelled around the world, as soon as I exit the aeroplane, I can immediately feel the different frequency of the culture I have entered. I know nothing and am at the mercy of the indigenous population until I can find my feet. When I return to England, as soon as I land, it is like a hand in a glove – I am familiar with everything and know how and what to do to achieve objectives and solve difficulties. Acculturation and acclimatisation are a matter of experience and familiarity. Even Chinese people born outside of China sometimes express an underlying sense of alienation within the culture their parents or ancestors migrated into.
