The joint statement also warned against targeting nuclear facilities under the International Atomic Energy Agency Safeguards, and urged all those concerned to return to the table of negotiations as soon as possible.

The ministers also stressed that the ongoing crisis cannot be resolved by military means.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei urged the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to condemn Israel’s aggression.

“This is a blatant aggression. Full stop. The world needs your office to condemn it ‘unequivocally’ – no ambiguity, no justification, no letting the aggressor hide behind ‘twisted concepts’,” said Baqaei in a post on X.

“Your mandate demands it,” he added.

Later, Leila Khaled hijacked a TWA aeroplane that landed in London. She was arrested and later released, and now lives in Jordan with her husband and two children. For his part, Lazzarini thanked Jordan for its support for the agency and its solidarity with Palestinian refugees.

Lazzarini stressed that despite all the international community’s calls, Israel invaded and attacked the southernmost Gaza city of Rafah on May 6, with half of Gaza’s population forced to flee.

He pointed out that the two main crossings in the south, Rafah Crossing and Kerem Shalom Crossing, have turned into conflict zones, and there are currently no crossings to transport aid across the borders.

Lazzarini noted that “198 UNRWA employees were killed, 160 sites were completely or partially destroyed, and employees were arrested, tortured, and forced to confess to crimes they did not commit.”

In the north, Israel struck Hezbollah posts, targeting areas where mortar shells had been fired toward Israeli communities or militants trying to launch rockets.

Also on Tuesday, the Israeli military said its aerial defence systems intercepted a surface-to-surface missile from the Red Sea and a drone near the southern city of Eilat. No injuries or damage were reported.

The Houthis, who control Yemen’s capital and much of northern Yemen, said in a statement on Tuesday afternoon that they targeted Eilat and an Israeli air base in the Negev desert with ballistic missiles and several drones.

They said Tuesday’s attack was their third operation against Israel since the conflict between Israel and Hamas began, without elaborating on the previous two attacks.

Pakistani UN ambassador Munir Akram, in his explanation of resolution before the vote, said the Jordanian draft, for the purpose of moderation, does not explicitly condemn Israel for its atrocities in Gaza. The Canadian amendment would have made the resolution unbalanced and unjust. He also pointed out that the Jordanian draft contains language for the release of hostages.
