Glen Carter, senior author of the study from the University of Melbourne and the Doherty Institute, said the study challenges the previously-held belief that rifaximin is low-risk for causing AMR.

“We’ve shown that rifaximin makes VRE resistant to daptomycin in a way that has not been seen before,” he said in a media release.

“It is also of concern that these daptomycin-resistant VRE might be transmitted to other patients in the hospital; a hypothesis that we are presently investigating.”

The authors of the new study said the findings highlight the critical need for effective genomics-based surveillance to detect emerging AMR.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said at a news conference in Beijing on Monday that such actions “only expose the hegemony and hypocrisy of the U.S.,” adding that the U.S. “should behave the way a major country should”.

“It has always been the practice of the U.S. to manipulate social media to spread false information, poison the public opinion environment, and smear the image of other countries. China firmly objects to this,” Lin said.

He added that when Washington wants to contain and suppress a country, it ignores the truth and “coordinates resources” to smear and discredit it. “This applies not only to the fabrication and dissemination of false information about Chinese vaccines, but also to various aspects, including defaming the popular Belt and Road Initiative and spreading rumours about the ‘overcapacity’ of China’s new energy vehicles.

“The international community should keep clear-eyed about such U.S. behaviour,” he said.

China: PLA Hospital Ship “Peace Ark” Embarks on “Socialist” Medical Mission! (16.6.2024)

During the mission, the ship will visit 13 countries, namely, Seychelles, Tanzania, Madagascar, Mozambique, South Africa, Angola, the Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Cameroon, Benin, Mauritania, Djibouti and Sri Lanka, and provide medical service to local people. It will also make port calls to France and Greece.

This is the 10th Mission Harmony for “Peace Ark” since its commissioning in 2008. The “Peace Ark” will offer free diagnosis and treatment for common and prevalent diseases to local residents, people in Chinese institutions, and overseas Chinese through onboard clinics and dispatched medical teams.

There are over 100 personnel on board the maritime hospital, featuring 17 clinical departments and 5 auxiliary diagnostic departments.

The “Peace Ark” is the first domestically designed and constructed standard ocean-going hospital ship in China. It has visited 45 countries and regions, providing medical services to over 290,000 people.

To address the problems, the National Clinical Research Center for Ocular Diseases and related associations have established standardized retinal fundus disease diagnosis and treatment processes and scientific management models for chronic retinal diseases in over 1,000 medical institutions nationwide.
