Health Bureau is covering all medical, medication and rehabilitation costs for victims.

The blaze had claimed 159 lives by 2 p.m. on Wednesday, with 31 people still missing, the Hong Kong Police Force said at a press briefing earlier Wednesday. A total of 140 bodies had been identified, said the police, adding that the victims were aged between 1 and 97 years old.

The police have completed the search for remains inside all seven fire-hit buildings, and will expand the search to the vicinity to check for remains under scaffolding that collapsed in the flames.

The sheer destructive power of this fire was so powerful so as to cause huge casualties. At least 128 lives have been confirmed lost, among them were the elderly – who were supposed to enjoy their old age in the lap of their descendants. There are children who have not had time to experience the world well. There are also young people who died full of dreams. Their departure has plunged countless families into endless grief.

The controversy erupted after The Daily Telegraph revealed an internal BBC memo showing that an October 2024 Panorama episode, Trump: A Second Chance?, had stitched together two segments of Trump’s speech on Jan. 6, 2021, delivered more than 50 minutes apart. The edit created the misleading impression that Trump was directly urging supporters toward the Capitol riot, sparking public outrage and prompting The New York Times to label it as the BBC’s “worst crisis in decades.”

In a social media post, Chief Secretary for Administration Chan Kwok-ki attributed Hong Kong’s ability to overcome difficulties during the interval to the enduring vitality of “one country, two systems”, as well as the central government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding Hong Kong’s prosperity and stability.

Political parties, including the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong — the city’s biggest political party — reaffirmed their support for deeper integration into national development and seizing new opportunities under “one country, two systems”.

Sunny Tan, chairman of the Hong Kong Productivity Council, pledged to leverage Hong Kong’s global connectivity to strengthen industry ties through international fashion events, strengthen the city’s brand and support internationalization efforts.

My Chinese family came to UK only after we (the “English”) invaded and subjugated their country. Half of my relatives are born in the UK – but we still have relatives living in China. We think Socialist China is a good thing and that China has a right to self-determination. This is not a threat to the UK – but extolls the freedom of thought the UK teaches its children that they possess at school. By supporting China – we are exhibiting the best of ancient Greek thought. We are also supporting everything great and good about England. Furthermore, we oppose English fascism and Ukrainian fascism. We oppose any form of racism and Neo-Nazism. Russia has the same right of self-determination as China and the UK. NATO-backed Neo-Nazism in Kyiv is NOT the best way to uphold and support World Peace! We are NOT Christians – but we do support the right of Christianity to exist and we admire the architecture of Christendom.

Many on the right and far-right detest Farage as a traitor and betrayer of the cause – but I doubt many know his plans to switch back-on this pathway of highly dubious legal immigration. Let’s face it, any policy the government decrees to be acceptable – becomes legal. The hypocrisy of Farage – that great friend of the betrayer of the left George Galloway – is only a drop in the ocean of the problems the UK has got. If you have access to a TV, computer screen, and/or a streaming service, you can regale yourself with the utter mess the UK has become via the (unintentionally) hilarious footage covering the Conference of Reform UK. This looks like a cross between X Factor, Stars in Their Eyes, and Blind Date. If you happen to have lived through any of these Crimes Against Humanity – you will probably “whince” as a form of Pavlovian conditioning.
