China: Plans to Add Counter-Tariffs on US Products Announced! (5.2.2025)

Luo Zhiheng, chief economist at Yuekai Securities, said China should resort to effective countermeasures against any tariff threats by the White House, while optimizing domestic policies and anchoring market expectations.

“Based on the experiences gained during the first Trump administration, China can utilize measures such as imposing additional tariffs and export controls to counter trade threats from the U.S.,” Luo said.

He added that China should continue to broaden the list of sanctioned goods and entities, and increase Beijing’s negotiation leverage with Washington.

Given heightened global uncertainties, China should scale up the intensity of its fiscal and monetary policies, actively expand domestic demand to counter any potential downturns in external demand, and steadily push forward high-level opening-up, expand networks with trade partners and diversify its trade portfolios, Luo said.

It is a reaction of impotence in the face of the inability to bend our will and in the face of the respect, sympathy and support that the Revolution inspires among the peoples of the world.

The economic blockade, its reinforcement and the new aggressive measures will continue to weigh, with a very damaging effect, on our economy, the standard of living, the potential for development and the legitimate dreams of justice and well-being of the Cuban people, as has been the case in recent years.

“These seriously violate the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. Joint Communiqués, interfere in China’s internal affairs, and undermine China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” according to China’s Foreign Ministry.

Pursuant to Articles 3, 4, 5, 6, 9 and 15 of the Law of the People’s Republic of China on Countering Foreign Sanctions, China decided to take countermeasures against seven companies as listed in the attached List of Targets of Countermeasures, i.e., Insitu, Inc., Hudson Technologies Co., Saronic Technologies, Inc., Raytheon Canada, Raytheon Australia, Aerkomm Inc. and Oceaneering International, Inc., and relevant senior executives:

Their movable and immovable properties and other kinds of assets within China shall be frozen.

All organizations and individuals within China shall be prohibited from engaging in transaction, cooperation and other activities with them.

This decision took effect immediately upon its announcement on Dec. 27, 2024.

The proposed legislation includes the creation of a U.S. task force to combat narcotics trafficking and provisions that would enable sanctions against Chinese entities, the Voice of America reported.

Lin emphasized that China is among the most resolute countries in implementing anti-drug policies, with comprehensive measures and a strong track record. It is also one of the countries with the most controlled substances and the strictest regulations in the world. China’s anti-drug authorities have always strictly enforced the law to combat the loss of precursor chemicals and ensure that relevant enterprises operate legally and in compliance with regulations.

The Chinese side firmly opposes certain American politicians distorting facts, spreading false information, and smearing China’s efforts in drug control, Lin added.

Three years on since the downgrade of bilateral ties with China, Lithuania has again taken detrimental action that further exacerbates the relations, the spokesperson said.

China calls on Lithuania to immediately stop undermining China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and stop creating difficulty for bilateral relations. “China reserves the right to take countermeasures against Lithuania,” the spokesperson noted.

“We hope the upcoming new government of Lithuania will follow the prevailing international consensus, abide by the one-China principle, and foster conditions for the normalization of China-Lithuania relations,” the spokesperson said.
