We knew that the Saturday before Chinese New Year would mean that London’s Chinatown (Gerrard Street) would be packed so we got early (ish) to get out on the road by around 10am (early for a Saturday). Still, less crowds equals less stress – although the staff of the New Loon Fung Restaurant were on edge – expecting a massive influx for “Dim Sum” (Chinese breakfast)!

The new hires may have been surprised to find the company brochure had a dedicated ladies’ section called ‘Matters Feminine’. However, the suffragettes would not have been too impressed with its content. Topics mainly included cooking, family and fashion.
‘It is all very well for a man to smile at the feminine love of clothes, and dismiss them as being of very little importance in life. Women know better. Husbands, who profess not to admire fashions, are not slow to complain at the dowdy appearance of their wives,’ read one passage.
In the following decades, many of the women employed found promotions were very much possible. Anne Edwards, who got a job as a clerical assistant in 1957, wrote: “Brilliant employers, they paid for me to attend Pitman’s College to extend my shorthand skills. They monitored my progress, my typewriting skills and promoted me from junior to manager’s secretary in the same department. I loved working there.”
One of the letters to the board reads: “We think that it is unfair that Cuthbert Taylor and other boxers without white, British parents were not allowed to fight for the British title. The colour bar was horrendous, horrific and disgraceful. It was not right then and it is not right now.”
It adds: “It was probably his dream to be the British boxing champion, but your colour bar stopped his dream from coming true.”
Schools that have written to the board include Cwmnedd primary in the Neath Valley, St Joseph’s Catholic junior, Port Talbot; Ysgol Gymraeg Santes Tudful in Merthyr Tydfil and Llanfaes community primary in Brecon. The number of schools involved continues to grow.
Aisling Brady Saunders, the deputy headteacher at St Joseph’s, said: “It was entirely the children’s idea to pen letters – they feel very strongly that Cuthbert Taylor, his surviving family and all boxers affected by the colour bar rule should have an apology.”
