Despite the difficult circumstances, in an oral history played out loud to visitors, Margaret reminisces fondly about her time in the shelter.

“I had a wonderful time,” she explains. “I was an only child, and I made friends. We used to rush up and down the tunnels.

“People were all in the same boat down there. It was a great leveller. Whether you were rich, poor or whatever you were. If you were homeless.

“People were very kind to each other, much more than they are now. It’s funny isn’t it, that it takes a war to do that.”

After the end of the conflict, the shelters continued to be used as cheap hotel accommodation costing three shillings a night, equivalent to £4 today.

Guests at Clapham South included those who arrived in Britain from the Caribbean as part of the Windrush Generation.

But in 1956, after a fire at the Goodge Street station shelter, the Government decided to abandon the tunnels.

Today, they are mainly used as archive storage, although the tunnels under Clapham Common once housed a hydroponic farm.

For anyone who wants to check out the shelter themselves, new dates for the ‘Hidden London’ tour were released earlier this week, with tickets costing £38.

The report documents how Israel’s extensive bombing campaign in Gaza has decimated essential services and unleashed an environmental catastrophe that will have lasting health impacts. By early 2024, over 25,000 tons of explosives—equivalent to two nuclear bombs—had been dropped on Gaza, causing massive destruction and the collapse of water and sanitation systems, agricultural devastation, and toxic pollution.

“By destroying vital water, sanitation and food systems, and contaminating the environment, Israel has created a lethal mix of crises that will inflict severe harm on generations to come,” the Committee said.

The report raises serious concerns about Israel’s use of AI-enhanced targeting systems in directing its military operations, and the impact it has had on civilians, particularly evident in the overwhelming number of women and children among the casualties.

Gaza: Israeli “Genocide” Continues – Western Media Propagandarises for Zionists! (16.4.2024)

In the centre of the Gaza Strip, intense artillery and missile shelling continues on the Nuseirat camp for the sixth day in a row, resulting in the at least five casualties and significant property damage.

Meanwhile, the occupation aircraft bombed multiple homes in Al-Mughraqa and the neighbouring city of Al-Zahraa.

The occupation artillery also fired a number of shells in the western area of Deir al-Balah.

Additionally, the occupation forces detained dozens of Palestinian men after abusing them.

The heavily-armed soldiers further forced the women and children to leave two shelter schools who seek refugee.

In Khan Yunis, south of the Gaza Strip, occupation artillery bombed several neighbourhoods, especially in the eastern regions, Abasan, Bani Suhaila, and Khuza’a, amid massive destruction of proprieties.

Like all the disinformation that has intensified lately, such fake stories as this are designed to take the attention of a passive and supine population away from the fact that the International Court of Justice is in the midst of finding Israel guilty of ‘Genocide’ – whilst Israeli troops (armed by the US, UK and EU) continue to carry out the very atrocities the ICJ has already judged as being ‘Crimes Against Humanity’! It is the murder of 30,000 Palestinian men, women and children – and the wounding of 70,000 others – by the Zionist-fascist IDF that is the problem, not Yemen’s Resistance to this Genocide, or the fact that relatively well-off Westerners might be inconvenienced for a short time when waiting for a brew. Time for another cup of relaxing tea – me thinks!
