China Exposes US “Volt Typhoon” [Section 702] Fabrication – for Warrantless Surveillance! (8.7.2024)

On April 19, the U.S. Senate approved the reauthorization with a vote of 60-34. This reauthorization extends the surveillance authority for two more years, allowing the U.S. government to continue collecting communications of non-Americans located outside the country without a warrant.

Data revealed that from May 2023 to January 2024, U.S. government-backed hacking organizations waged over 45 million cyber attacks — all authorized by Section 702 — against Chinese government entities, academies, scientific research institutes, enterprises and critical infrastructures.

Calling the U.S. government agencies the mastermind behind the “Volt Typhoon,” the report described such a move as the inevitable product of the international hegemonism that the United States strives to maintain.

The SAR government respects and values the rights and freedoms protected by the Basic Law, but freedom of speech is not absolute, the spokesman added.

In order to safeguard national security, the application is necessary, reasonable and legal, meeting the requirements of the relevant human rights legislation and being complementary to the existing law, the spokesman said.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said at a news conference in Beijing on Monday that such actions “only expose the hegemony and hypocrisy of the U.S.,” adding that the U.S. “should behave the way a major country should”.

“It has always been the practice of the U.S. to manipulate social media to spread false information, poison the public opinion environment, and smear the image of other countries. China firmly objects to this,” Lin said.

He added that when Washington wants to contain and suppress a country, it ignores the truth and “coordinates resources” to smear and discredit it. “This applies not only to the fabrication and dissemination of false information about Chinese vaccines, but also to various aspects, including defaming the popular Belt and Road Initiative and spreading rumours about the ‘overcapacity’ of China’s new energy vehicles.

“The international community should keep clear-eyed about such U.S. behaviour,” he said.
