“We didn’t plan to come to Rome for the city’s birthday but seeing all this is a great way to spend part of a day, taking it all in,” Loria told Xinhua. “I especially enjoyed seeing the contrasts, the period costumes in a modern city.”

Though the origins of Sunday’s celebrations date back centuries, the events have caught on with travellers as tourism in Italy has recovered from the setbacks of the coronavirus pandemic.

There are no official estimates for the number of people who participated in Sunday’s activities, media reports said the city had deployed extra police for security and traffic control. Hotel bookings were higher than usual for the weekend, media reports said.

After the independence, the Syrian people have achieved many successes in the struggle to defend the sovereignty and dignity of the country and achieve socio-economic changes, resolutely standing against the ceaseless moves of all hostile forces for aggression and intervention, the message said.

Expressing the belief that the traditional relations of friendship and cooperation between the two countries would grow stronger, the message extended invariable support and encouragement to the just cause of the government and people of Syria for defending the sovereignty, peace and security of the country. Furthermore, it is alarming to read of the primitive blood feuds described as forming the general historical context surrounding this important and epoch-changing discovery – being every bit as brutal and primitive as the murders routinely carried-out by ISIS and Al Qaeda today – behaviour very different from that of moderate, economically developed and well-educated Muslims. These are people who inhabit a pre-modern mode of behaviour and corresponding mind-set – and although I am not a theist – it is interesting to consider why the Christian God would choose to deliver his texts into the hands of such people. But perhaps that is the point. The Christian God speaks of unqualified love and forgiveness (as does the Holy Qur’an of Allah) – whilst the Jewish God is vengeful, vindicative and quite often demanding of blood. Perhaps the essence of Gnosticism has survived right in the middle of Christian theology – and it has done so without being seen – waiting for the moment when the ceramic jar holding its teachings is found!
