Aravindan Balakrishnan’s Workers’ Institute – Advanced Mao Zedong Thought in the UK!

Before China’s ‘opening up’ during the 1980s, Mainland Chinese visitors to the UK were relatively few in number. Indeed, this was exactly the same situation across the Europe and the rest of the world. Those who were permitted to travel to the West were of very good family and directly linked to the Communist Party of China (CPC) in some direct or indirect manner. They were trusted with learning everything possible in their travels, and to return to China to pass-on what they had learned. In those now far-off days, it was acknowledged by the CPC that the technological achievements of the mature capitalism of the West was far superior at the time, and following what Marx had written about the progressive nature of certain elements of an otherwise corrupt bourgeoisie, Socialists should take the most progressive elements of bourgeois development, whilst working to seize the means of production and eradicate the exploitative capitalist (socio-economic) forces that made the lives of the workers intolerable!  

The proletariat – after applying Mao Zedong Thought from the 1920s onward – successfully seized the means of production in most of Mainland China in 1949! However, after securing this victory, the CPC had to begin its mighty task of slowly but sure eradicating the immense material poverty and cultural ignorance that existed throughout the ancient land of China! To start with, this obviously meant relieving the worst burdens of abject poverty through ‘collectivisation’ and ensuring farming was optimised whilst communal food kitchens and barrack-like housing was built for the homeless. However, the CPC understood that the key problem for China involved its cultural ‘isolation’ and economic impoverishment – a leftover from its thousands of years of feudal culture and religious thinking which generated the ‘tribute’ system that favoured only an elite minority in China. Foreign invasion and the arrival of the colonial Westerners soon put an end to this system of existence and due to the heightened sense of injustice and oppressive burden upon the Chinese people, led directly to the forming of the Communist Party! 

The CPC has carefully steered China out of this feudal morass and has led it in an entirely new and unique direction! In a very short time, its technological achievements through Socialist science have caught-up with and even surpassed the US! This demonstrates that the correct application of Marxist-Leninism (Maoism) in China is not static and is certainly not limited to any redundant model of the past. Of course, various movements have claimed an association with Mao Zedong Thought over the years, particularly in the former (and current) areas suffering under the yoke of imperialist (Eurocentric) domination! For non-White people suffering the injustices of European imperialism and colonialism, the life and teachings of Mao Zedong are considered nothing less than a tonic to those seeking a non-White interpretation of Marxist-Leninism! By ‘White’, of course, we are referring to the bourgeoisie and its lackeys – and never ‘White’ Comrades who fully support the Maoist Revolutionary path! 

Whilst fighting bourgeois racism – we must understand the terms used by bourgeois racism and turn their poison back on the racists in a new and Revolutionary manner (thus ‘freeing’ the minds and bodies of those who have had to suffer under such oppression)! Furthermore, for Mao Zedong Thought to truly take root in a land outside of China, a unique and advanced dialectical mindset must be both ‘present’ and ‘highly’ functional so that the historical difference between the China that formulated Mao Zedong Thought – and the new historical-cultural context within which Mao Zedong Thought is to be applied. One example of this advanced use of dialectics has been evident in the work of Aravindan Balakrishnan – the founder of the Workers’ Institute (and other Revolutionary activities and initiatives) in the United Kingdom. Part of his Revolutionary success can be seen in the extent to which the British State has targeted him, his followers and supporters, and his Revolutionary path! 

An issue of vital importance is that Aravindan Balakrishnan interpreted Marxist-Leninist (Maoism) in a ‘correct’ ideological context. He had to surmount terrible injustices living outside of China and taking the Revolutionary fight not only directly to the bourgeoisie – but fighting from within the heart of the ‘White’ establishment itself! The CPC of today, whenever I discuss this issue with my Comrades in China, all agree that this has been a monumental task undertaken by the Workers’ Institute!  It was pointed-out to me that other than North Korea – Mao Zedong never applied his ideology anywhere outside of China! He did not have to, of course, as his task was already immense enough, but Aravindan Balakrishnan, on the other hand, as an example of a superb ‘non-European’ Revolutionary leader, applied Mao Zedong Thought in a manner that ethnic Chinese Communists today fully endorse! Indeed, out of the various other manifestations of Mao Zedong around the world, Aravindan Balakrishnan was subjected to the true face of British State oppression and fascist persecution – a price he is still paying whilst his body is imprisoned in a UK prison!  

A Comrade in the CPC pointed-out that the Western bourgeoisie – particularly in its British aspect – has often attempted to destroy the reputation of non-White activists by implying that they participate in unusual or immoral sexual activity (exactly the same activity the bourgeoisie are continuously ‘caught’ doing in real life)! This is invariably coupled with the idea of inappropriate relations and supposed totalitarian leadership strategies! Mao Zedong, for instance, was accused by a BBC documentary of continuously having sexual relations with young Chinese (teenage) girls in a bid to develop physical immortality (premised upon an old Daoist idea)! In China, men and women cannot get married until they are in their twenties (with permission from both sets of parents). This was instigated in 1949 to stop twelve-year-old (poor) girls being forced into polygamous marriages! At the same time, the principle of ‘monogamy’ was instigated. Wealthy Chinese men could no longer have four wives and numerous concubines! Although the marriage laws render a formal ‘age of consent’ redundant – Chinese law states that sexual knowledge of a girl fourteen-years or under is an automatic ‘death sentence’.  

Mao Zedong, along with many other Revolutionary thinkers, generated these laws to put right historical injustices within Chinese society. Mao Zedong had a high regard for women and their abilities and had no sexual interest in teenagers as suggested by the BBC! There is no evidence for this, but it does not stop the British State from concocting its hypocritical attempts at applying its own attempts of projecting its corrupt standards upon others! This is the current situation regarding the Revolutionary – Aravindan Balakrishnan – who has suffered a concerted attack upon his person and reputation by the British State for being a very effective ‘Maoist’ leader – who has applied Mao Zedong Thought right in the heart of the lion’s den! His task is difficult – as all genuine Revolutionary action undoubtedly is!  The fight today is to raise a more thorough general awareness of the situation involving Aravindan Balakrishnan, and to ‘reject’ the fascistic propaganda of the British State, whilst working to get him out of prison – particularly as he is now in his eighties!
